If you’ve ever had that experience, you’re certainly not alone. Millions of people step on the scale every Monday morning convinced they’ve somehow gained five to ten pounds of body fat over the course of a weekend. That single number is often enough to replace confidence with frustration and motivation with discouragement. Some people become so disappointed that they abandon the healthy habits they had been building because they believe all of their progress has been erased.

The problem isn’t the number on the scale. The problem is what most people believe that number represents. When the scale suddenly jumps several pounds over the course of a day or two, the immediate assumption is that those pounds must be body fat. In reality, that’s usually not what’s happening at all. Your body is simply responding to the foods you ate exactly the way human physiology was designed to respond.

What is the scale actually measuring?

Your scale measures total body weight at that exact moment in time. It has no ability to distinguish between body fat, muscle, glycogen, water, bone, organs, or the many other tissues and fluids that make up your body. It simply measures the force of gravity acting on everything inside you and reports one number.

That distinction changes everything because the scale isn’t telling you what changed. It’s only telling you that something changed. Your body’s first priority is to use that glucose to provide energy for your brain, muscles, and other tissues. Approximately 80 percent of your glycogen is stored inside your skeletal muscles, while most of the remaining 20 percent is stored in your liver. Your skeletal muscles use glycogen to fuel movement and exercise, while your liver stores glycogen so it can gradually release glucose into your bloodstream between meals and while you sleep, helping maintain stable blood sugar levels. Without glycogen, your body would have no efficient way to store readily available energy for future use.

So far, however, none of this explains why the scale can suddenly increase by five to ten pounds after a weekend of overindulging.

The answer lies in one remarkable characteristic of glycogen that very few people have ever been taught.

For every gram of glycogen your body stores, it also stores approximately three to four grams of water.

That single physiological principle explains much of the rapid increase you see on the scale after a weekend of eating larger amounts of starchy and sugary foods than you normally do. As your muscles and liver replenish their glycogen stores, they also draw a significant amount of water into those cells. Like most nutrients, however, your body works hard to keep sodium within a very narrow range. When you suddenly consume much more sodium than usual, your body temporarily retains additional water to help maintain that balance.

Unlike glycogen, which stores water inside your muscle and liver cells, sodium causes your body to retain water outside your cells. This is known as extracellular fluid. While you don’t need to remember the terminology, understanding the difference helps explain why you may look and feel different after a weekend of eating highly processed foods.

Have you ever noticed your wedding ring feels tighter than usual? Maybe your watch suddenly feels snug on your wrist, your face looks puffier in the mirror, or your socks leave deeper impressions around your ankles. Those are all common signs of temporary fluid retention caused by excess sodium.

Gravity also plays a role. Throughout the day, some of that extra fluid naturally settles into the lower parts of your body, which is why swelling is often most noticeable in your feet and ankles. While it can certainly be frustrating to see or feel, it’s important to understand that this is a normal physiological response rather than an indication that you’ve suddenly gained several pounds of body fat.

When you combine increased glycogen storage and the water that naturally accompanies it with temporary sodium-related fluid retention, it becomes much easier to understand how the scale can increase by five to ten pounds over the course of a single weekend. As sodium levels return to their normal range, your body also releases the additional fluid it temporarily retained to maintain proper balance. This is why your rings begin fitting normally again, the puffiness in your face gradually subsides, and the swelling in your feet and ankles gradually disappears.

For many people, these normal physiological processes occur over the course of several days after returning to their usual eating habits. As your body uses its stored glycogen and restores its normal fluid balance, much of that temporary weight disappears just as quickly as it appeared.

Understanding this process is important because it helps prevent one of the biggest mistakes people make after a weekend of overindulging. Too often, someone sees a five-to-ten-pound increase on the scale and immediately assumes they’ve undone weeks or even months of hard work. Feeling discouraged, they respond by skipping meals, drastically restricting their food intake, or spending hours trying to “burn off” the weekend.

None of those reactions address what actually caused the temporary increase in body weight.
