Caffeine – To Have or Not To Have, That Is The Question

Caffeine, Good or Bad?

“Hey Tony, I came across your Facebook page a couple of weeks ago and think what you are doing is great. I immediately thought you looked familiar and think it’s because you helped me lifting weights once while in high school at the YMCA which was super nice of you. Anyhow, my question is – what are your thoughts on caffeine? Is it best to avoid it? I know soda is bad but what about coffee or green tea? Thanks so much for the help! Jesse”

Great question, Jesse.

Although caffeine is a very controversial subject, unless you have a pre-existing heart condition there are many good benefits associated with natural sources like in teas and coffees.

Such as:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased metabolism
  • Increase Mental and Physical Function
  • Increase Fatty acid oxidation
  • Increased carbohydrate metabolism
  • Increase Epinephrine Levels
  • Increase Bronchodilation
  • Decreased muscle interstitial potassium levels

All of these would be desirable for anyone looking for increase athletic performance or fat loss but Like anything there are also risks associated to caffeine consumption (most of which is dose related).

Notably:

  • Dehydration and cramping
  • Headache
  • Nausea/Dizziness
  • Frequent urination which can lead to dehydration
  • Heart palpitations
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Irritability, Anxiety, Nervousness, and possible Depression

So here is my take on it……. If you don’t suffer from any of the listed side effect associated with caffeine consumption enjoy a healthy dose and the many benefits that go along with it as well as the antioxidant protection it provides. Remember everything in moderation and if you are noticing some of the listed side effect please consult your physician.
